Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the right to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
