UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate souls, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned church.

A World of Individual Dread

"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The core mechanic involves managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
