Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
