'Significant concern' for the touring side as Atkinson leaves the field suffering a hamstring problem.

The English seamer increased England's injury problems upon exiting the playing area early on day two of the Boxing Day Test against Australia.

The right-arm seamer experienced discomfort in his left leg immediately following a delivery of the fourth over on Saturday.

Team management stated the 27-year-old had experienced "tightness" and would spend time off the field to undergo evaluation "in the coming hours".

The concluding match in this Ashes battle beginning on 4 January begins on Sunday, 4 January.

The visitors have been without fast bowlers Mark Wood to a knee injury and Jofra Archer to a side strain on the current trip.

Matthew Fisher was added to the party as cover for Wood.

His form was underwhelming in the opening two Tests, managing only three wickets.

He was left out from the previous Test, only to be brought back for the fourth Test to fill the void.

Surrey's Atkinson showed better form in Melbourne, taking two wickets with the ball, before adding 28 while batting as one of just three teammates to reach double figures.

Following a brief spell late on the first day, he came back the next day and dismissed the nightwatchman edging to the keeper.

However, on the final ball of his spell, he delivered a change of pace to Travis Head and suddenly grabbed his left hamstring.

Atkinson was brought back for the Boxing Day Test having missed the Adelaide game.
